they can be taught as IR commands to other URC remotes, but the the MSC400 will only respond to RF triggers. I've done this with the MX450 before. I loaded up the triggers into an MX980, taught them to the 450, then sent them out via RF. Worked fine, but we extremely tedious.
So if you were using a non URC device, it would have to be able to send those IR triggers out by RF, and it would have to be compatible with the URC RF frequency.
