See, I had a girlfriend in college who was quite a wonderful violinist, and more than once I listened to her practicing from close up. VIOLINS MAKE HORRIDLY SCREECHY SOUNDS. My experience of hearing this, from a pro, at about five feet made me wonder if all the initial screechy sounding CDs weren't perhaps the accurate recordings. Nobody ever tested for that with the Touch For Health test.

I would bet that she was trying to play quietly, which is when the screechy sounds happen most. It's easy to play a violin loudly- the bow is in better contact with the strings but to play quietly, there's less pressure and the bow doesn't move as fast. A good violin is surprisingly loud.
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."
