Thank you for the suggestion. Reading a few reviews on the Amazon seems that 3rd party are hit or miss and possibly could damage the unit, although unlikely to probably cause any issues.

I guess the question I have is really "Are there better remotes now available that are superior to the MX-980" that I should consider upgrading to at this time?

If you're truly thinking of an upgrade, you could consider their MX-HomePro product. The hard key remote is somewhat of a step back from your MX-980 at first glance, however it does add some 2-way functionality for entertainment and home automation products, and it comes with all the phone and tablet licences you would need. It required a good network as the remote communicates via wi-fi, and the hub can be either hard-wired or wi-fi. Add a Z-Wave processor, and you get lighting, locks, and even IP camera on screen of the remote.
