Switch on wall goes to a plug. In that plug is a 12v transformer that powers LED strip lights. What would the set up be to dim the lights? The LED's are dimmable. Do we need a special dimming transformer?

You need:

1. A dimmable driver which is dimmable by forward-phase or reverse-phase dimming.

2. A dimmer which matches the requirements of the driver (MLV, ELV etc.).

3. To remember that you cannot connect a dimmer to a wall receptacle unless the wall receptacle is UL approved for a dimming load. As far as I know, Lutron is the only company which markets a UL Listed dimmable receptacle. It's available in half hot/half dim or both halves dimmable. It uses a special plug which goes on the cord of your LED driver. This keeps people from plugging in a vacuum cleaner or radio into a receptacle which is fed from a dimmer.
