Laptops were actually the cause of the policy change. Costco did an analysis and found that there were thousands of people who had returned “defective” laptops between 1 and 3 years old multiple times. Because of the nature of PC issues (“it locks up”, “its really slow”, etc), Costco had no way to call bullshit on it without hiring a “computer tech” for every location. TVs could always be plugged in by just about anybody and verified if they worked or not, so the number of people actually shitty enough to try the “return policy upgrade” was very low.
