If you don't want hot spotting, then you need to spec the right product/profile for the location.

Use deeper/larger profiles when you are directly viewing the lighting. I use these profiles or similar: [Link: klusdesign.com]
This way, I can put 2 strips side by side and also stagger the LED placement, to help eliminate the hot spotting. The almost 1 inch depth, plus the staggering basically gives you a solid beam of light.

I only use the half inch profiles when the led's are not being directly seen. Therefore, you don't notice the hot spotting at all.
