The codes you are trying to learn may be toggle bit codes. I'm not sure if the MX500 has the "learn-2" option, but the MX780 does. This is what you use to learn toggle bit codes. So m1964 may have a chance at making this work if he tries learning the codes with the mx780 remote.
Not certain what "toggle bit" codes are, but, whatever they are, sounds like that may well be it.
Whenever I've seen "toggle" codes mentioned, I always took that to mean codes that toggled a state on the device, such as power on/off. Maybe not?
