I worked in a house that was a mix of exotic hardwood and rough stone flooring. The homebuilder insisted on everybody taking their shoes off, no shoe covers, socks only. The wood floors in the house would gouge/scratch if you looked at them sideways. It was utterly painful walking/standing on the stone floors. After a couple of days I brought a stylish pair of house shoes to work with me and asked the builder if they were acceptable. He agreed and I spent the rest of the time on that job wearing a pair of back with flames on them house slippers.
Yes, it is an OSHA issue making people work barefoot but this guy did not care.
I wear shoe covers in recently completed unoccupied new homes and gauge their use in finished homes based on what I see the homeowner doing.
