I use my debit card only at ATMs from my own bank. And for anything I buy in person, I don't use the credit card, I get out cash from my own bank ATM and pay for it that way. Occasionally I'll use the CC at the grocery store or Wally World if the ATM is whacked or there's a long line. That's only via chip based terminals, no one there ever sees or touches my card.
I have a handful of regular charges set up with quite legit companies, and that's it. If I use my CC online it's only with very legit companies, like Amazon, and that's pretty seldom.
That's all I use it for. Mostly I try to do cash from the ATM. Obviously if it was something larger purchased in a local store, I might have to use the card. But 99% of what I do in person it's easy to just get out cash and pay for it.
I've been pretty lucky with this strategy and haven't had an incident in over a decade.
