Does the AVR have component out? You could see if the component in goes out the component. You could also check for a manual to the Sony to see if it upconverts. It could have a problem.
It does not upconvert. That is an entry level Sony AVR from 9+ years ago. I think it was $249 or less when it was new. It is a crappy little box meant to be sold at Walmart or Best buy on the end cap - right next to the bubblegum & energy drinks.
Literally in testing, the thing could not put out more than 35watts per channel, when trying to drive all channels at once. The whole thing only weighs 16 pounds and is mostly empty space inside the chassis. It has 'no' features.
The last one I worked on a few years ago, even the discrete IR codes were wonky. Had to use that old 'Sony system off' discrete IR code for OFF.
Dav,
Hope you explained well your per hour rate $. And gave him a ballpark of how many hours it will take. The typical customer like this, will have a heart attack seeing a labor bill higher than all his equipment is worth. Unless he understands that now and wants to get a little better equipment. But he is still hanging onto VHS, so probably not.
