What did you mean by pressing the button to look for timing requirements?
Assume that the device only reacts for signal of duration between t0 and t1 -- there are such devices. So start pressing a button first "very short", them "slightly longer", then "somewhat longer", etc, up to "really quite long". Worth a try.
