They've always done this. It's great when they're in a rack and you don't have to worry about the front IR window getting hit with stray signals.

Well, the customer was my mother in law & she didn't want to pay $12 a month for another cable box.
All I did was mount the IR eye on the IR receiver in the other room lol. Works great. Nothing like a little Frankenstein install. 👌🏻
