I am guessing the SmartTV is being used for Netflix, YouTube or similar streaming.
Why not sell him an AppleTV or similar device that can connect HDMI into the receiver and provide him with the same (probably more) features of the SmartTV without the headache of ARC and the added cost of the HDMI extenders?
This becomes such a huge point of contention with some of my clients. They could have every streaming device in the universe and some still want access to the "smart" features of their tvs, even if they suck and are not user friendly.
The few times clients have been insistent on it, I have used the Wyrestorm EX-70-H2X-ARC HDMI extender. ARC does seem to work fine on it (at least with the combo of an LG OLED and a Sony ES AVR. Not a cheap solution (retails for ~$1,000) but if that is what they want, that is what it is gonna cost.
