For...400 bucks. Ok.
The cord cutting crowd did not want the recurring fee.
Trust me that is has been a much easier sale at $399 with no fee ever than it was at $149 for the hardware + $149 year.

can you confirm this: on their other boxes, if you prepay for the lifetime plan and the box dies (in or out of warranty)...you have to buy another plan, it does not transfer. I call that a shady scam that they don't make clear at time of purchase. Does the same hold true for this box? Because that's the whole reason I dumped TiVo a few years back and refused to ever sell another one.
I don't know about the 'if it dies' part, especially under the warranty.
I know you cannot transfer a lifetime subscription from an older series to a newer series. IE: one of my good dealers has a lifetime on a functional older TiVo XL or Premier, and was told he could not transfer his lifetime sub when upgrading to a Bolt and Minis
My advice is to never buy lifetime on TiVo.
Coach the clients to go with the annual renewal option, which saves them the equivalent of 2 monthly payments each year.
$549.99 = AIP (lifetime)
$149.99 = Annual
$ 14.99 = Monthly
