Ernie's DVR scheme might work for you, but you are likely to become farther and farther behind in real time as you jockey to avoid commercials. Probably, this is not a big deal, but you could miss the beginning of a following program on another channel.

You could turn the whole scheme inside out and record the program before watching.

Actually, that was my scheme. I don't know what you were describing in the first paragraph.
At this point you will be jumping ahead to avoid commercials.

Bingo! That's exactly what I was trying to say -- fast forwarding through commercials.

Overall, you'll be spending less time in front of the set

sounds like a reason to do it this way!

or watching more programs in the same elapsed time, but you will not be watching in real time.

I don't see ANY advantage to watching in real time unless you want to tweet your vote for who dances the best, or something like that.

And this topic is why pro's shouldn't allow users to have say in designing systems.

I disagree. We need to be ready to explain why it can't be done, or (often) just giving a guess as to how much it would cost to do what they ask. But sometimes customers, ignorant of the limitations or difficulties in doing something, nonetheless ask questions that can stimulate us to do things in a new and better way. Anyone who has worked out a solution to something (us) has in some way closed his mind to other solutions. Good ideas can come from left field.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
