Erase the learns, reteach but just press and hold down the volume keys on the donor remote during learning. There is also chance the volume keys are giving out on mx-850, happens all the time.

Many thanks for that re-learning suggestion, which has fixed my problem. The MX-850 and the original Oppo remote now operate at the same rate. In both cases, it takes 11 seconds to increase the volume from 0 to 100 (or vice versa).
