I think that the internet has moved us past the point where, even if people valued serious news and actually believed anything that went against their side's interests, that it still could be practical. You can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a major investigation, and the moment you reveal it, it's all over the internet for free. No one has to come watch your station or buy your newspaper to get the whole story. While respect for ownership of information and digital content isn't absolute zero, it's not far from it these days.
