I question if he truly is a musician. Because most musician clients I've had, are use to the high cost of quality and features they want.

Anyway... On the Bluray player, there are only a handful that will play 'ALL' formats out there (CD, HDCD, DVD-A, SACD, etc...).
Oppo is the most popular and best IMO.
Denon has some but same price or even more expensive.
Sony has that new Universal player for around $350 (that has streaming services built-in as well). That might have been a good choice.

Separate streaming box:
Roku or AppleTV. The choice would come down to his preference but note; a lot of musicians are in the Apple ecosphere at work. So an AppleTV is usually the choice they like.
