At the end of this, I conclude: I'd say you have to connect things, print out pages 39 and 40 of the manual, and figure out what the hell it really does. If you read all this, you'll still have to try it out and see.

Ok. Sigh. I now applaud you, highfigh, for pointing out the pages and NOT trying to tell what the instructions said. This is still not clear, not even after Matt said:

Power Amp assign only (Variable), no Z2 preouts at that price point in the old days.

But what, then, is the 1911's ZONE2 line output using RCA connectors? Is that not a Z2 preout? I guess not, since preamps allow you to vary the output. But it's a Z2 line level output, so saying there's no Z2 preout is very unclear.

And here's the source of the confusion. From the manual, Page 39, under Playback in Zone 2 (Separate Room):

*You can operate this unit so as to enjoy audio in a different room (Zone2) other than the MAIN ZONE (room where the unit is located).
*You can simultaneously play back the same source in both the MAIN ZONE and ZONE2. You can also play back separate sources in the MAIN ZONE and ZONE2.
*There are two methods to do this, as described below. Choose one of the methods.
1 ZONE2 playback by speaker output
2 ZONE2 playback by audio output using an external amplifier

What has not mentioned at this point is that the volume of the speaker output using the 1911's amplifiers is controlled by ZONE2 volume of the 1911, and playback using an external amplifier DOES NOT allow control of the volume from the 1911.

The manual also says on Page 39:

Adjust the volume on the connected amplifier.

This is under a drawing showing the amplifier to be in a separate room. That is, you use that amp, not the 1911, to control the volume.

Then there's contradictory information on Page 40 in the PLAYBACK section:
Adjusting the volume
Use VOL (up+down symbols) to adjust the volume.

Then it gets more complicated than that and I'm not going to try to type it out.

I'd say you have to connect things, print out those two pages, and figure out what the hell it really does.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
