Try the Toslink cable without an extender.
I have read that you are fine up to 150', but others say 100'.
It's a fiber optic cable, granted 1983 spec, but prob not an issue.
It very well may, especially if the cable is glass as opposed to plastic.
As far as an extender, we've used AppSys before for bidirectional over category cable. Here is their standard directional extender that would work for this setup:
