I've seen so many idiots doing stupid things and not responding to reason* that I've taken to complimenting people of any trade when I see them doing something clever. This happens often enough that it's heartening, but few people are complimented on their practical smarts.
*Like the door guy who was cutting aluminum mullions with a skil saw while not wearing any hearing protection. That combination makes a hugely loud shrieking sound. I yelled at him "Do you have any kids? Do you ever want to hear the voices of your grandkids?"
