agree it does sound dumb but sometimes it can be a matter of interpretation.

Her: When is Cinco de Mayo? (she was 100% serious)

might mean "what date" does it fall on, but it also might mean "what day of the week" does it fall on (i.e. mon, tue...). Since that could play a big role in the different plans, especially if it is not a statutory holiday.
