For a $300-400 item & installation cost, if the client balks at the price of the item (and it's markup), have them supply it. You'll handle installation without concerns with warranty, support, etc.
As others have said, the ROI would have to be much greater in either job satisfaction or $$$ for it to make sense going kustom route.
