Thanks DJY, I tried that yesterday but it accomplished nothing. Despite selecting the receiver as the sound to control, the 'TV' light on the remote remains illuminated. I also tried every other method including those provided in the Bell user manual, under the 'menu' options.

It seems to me that in its previous life (this is a refurbished remote) the user had it set up to control TV volume, but of course I have no idea of what make that TV was. In other words, I need to 'undo' the changes made which seems to have assigned the volume controls to some unknown make of TV.
