Looking at the IFIXIT photos, I think that the IR receiver is in the front on a line extended between the power socket and HDMI jack on the rear.
If you want to search for the sensor, encapsulate an IR emitter in an IR opaque container with a small aperture, then slide the assembly along the front of the AppleTV while sending IR commands.
