There is no standard, so whatever Sony has done is okay IF THEY DOCUMENT IT. And they probably didn't, right?

It makes sense to have ring and sleeve work, and in fact that might be the intended design. Why does it make sense? Because they might have been planning to make it possible to plug in an IR sensor there, and the only way to keep from shorting the power to ground when inserting or removing the plug is to put power on the tip.

Like documentation, though, the question arises: is that why they did it that way? Are they communicating that in the owner's manual?
