BTW, just to make it clear, the 'play this file' is also UPnP. It's part of the AVTransport service, which I assume you are already supporting. Presumably now you just reject the request if it's made. But it's already part of the UPnP interfaces you are likely implementing, so there wouldn't need to be any big change in terms of the interface itself. No need to support any new services or anything like that.

So just adding the simple ability to ask the box to add this file to the playlist, and to just play that list in the normal manner, that's all that's needed for non-DLNA integration really. In our case, we'd never even have a list, we just feed the device one file at a time as the previous stops we feed it the next one, because we manage the browsing and playlist within our automation system, where we can control how it works and insure all players and all media repositories work the same internally. Being able to treat the device like a passive player is what allows us to do that. That's very important to us.
