That's because the guy who wrote the RTI driver spent months reverse-engineering the control protocol. It's more involved than simply sending text strings to the AppleTV.

If you have an AppleTV 2, you can jailbreak it, and there is some support for IP control that way.

Consider a Roku 3. You lose Airplay, but get most of the same apps, and IP control to boot.
