Use the AVR's onboard calibration first with the included mic. The calibration circuit and the included mic are designed to work together. Use a wide bandwidth Balun or extender for remote equipment installs. The onboard Auto Calibration Circuit will do more than you could in a few minutes so use it as a reference starting point. At the minimum it checks; Distance and Wiring Polarity.
Yamaha's YPAO is quite good and allows you to manually pick and adjust PEQ for all channels.
