cma,
The older remotes won't control audio gear until you program them to control a TV. In fact, I don't think the older remotes send out DirecTV power commands with the buttons at the top right until you program the remote to control a TV; then both DirecTV and TV commands are send out when you push those buttons. The TV that's set up does not need to be of any particular brand, just some TV or other.

Knowing that, let's see if that fact might imply something about the new units. Maybe if you program the new remote to control some TV, the receiver might respond differently?

Otherwise, maybe the remote uses a different couple of commands. Learn them: Program the Genie to control a TV. Turn the receiver on and off a couple of times and see if there's some indication on the remote as to whether it's sending out a TV command or a satellite command. On the old remotes, the LEDs at the top show you clearly that the satellite is switched, then the TV. Use that information to learn from the DirecTV remote, using your hand to cover the remote's LED during the time when the TV signal is being sent. This is old-fashioned workaround stuff, but you might be able to capture the present discrete commands that way.

Of course, edmund is likely to chime in here with a much simpler answer!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
