While he's probably taking 7.1 to specifically mean lossless/HD audio formats, I don't think there are any discrete lossy 7.1 formats compatible with optical either, are there? Certainly you can decode up to 7.1 from even stereo... but I think the "best" you can get in discrete channels over traditional connections is DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 - but it was never very popular.
