I've done probably a half dozen projects with speakers buried and no map. I connect one lead of the toner to ground. You have to be careful and pay attention, because the toner WILL tone everywhere. You can be standing in the middle of the room and it will tone. When you check the ceiling/wall, the light typically only lights up when you are on top of the actual wire though. Haven't had to patch a single hole yet.
