He's got a ground problem and changing the grounding setup is no guarantee of improvement. Breaking the ground circuit is much more likely to help, so going optical is the best way.

This is a really unclear statement.
What belongs to the customer? The Sony with the problem? Those prices for what? For no DAC? For a converter? You're asking him to pay for a new Blu-ray player without, as far as I can tell, consulting the Jensen Transformer papers on ground / hum problems. That's the place to start.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
