Lowhz, I think you're on the right track but I don't recall if there was ever a stand alone MX980 editor. However, I did run into a similar problem when the version of the CCP editor that programmed the remote was very old compared to the current running version where you're attempting to upload programming from the remote.
I don't remember if there was a 980 stand alone. That remote is getting old. There was a 950 editor.
But for the record, that method I posted above is how you import an old remote program into CCP.
