I just picked up some network to IR gateways for Roomie on iOS and bought a used iPhone 4 to make sure there's always the remote ready.  The more I work with it, I think this is the solution.  Sure, I want to start a Kickstarter campaign for an iPhone hard button case, but for the time being, I think this might work.  The nice thing is that a lot of devices offer 2-way IP based communication, so it seems more responsive and informative than with Pronto.  It'll be a month or more before I set it all up, but I'll try to report back.
