That's right you don't need to stand by your Apple TV.
There is a really nice feature in Apple TV settings called Learn Remote, that let you use any third party remote which have one unused device and your apple TV will learn the codes from that remote. Usually we are using codes into our remote, Apple TV does the opposite, it learn your remote codes.
Just follow the instructions in Apple TV Settings/General/Remotes/Learn Remote
I am very pleased how easy was to include Apple TV with all my devices into my RCRP05B remote using IR.
