Torchwood was trying to be "edgy" and, frankly, that aspect turned me off and I didn't watch much of it. It's more subtle on Doctor Who and American shows, and usually played to comedic effect.
You didn't miss much. The entire show revolved around the necessity for every character to react strangely to every set of circumstances that came their way. The new girl starts out sleeping with the guy who was sleeping with the girl who tried to kill her while the asian woman has been in love with the guy that the new girl considers a "tosser" even though shes sleeping with him. New girl is also in love with jack but hes too busy with the receptionist whos hiding his cyber-chick in the basement.
The other odd aspect was that Torchwood is hundreds of years old but its just the 5 of them hiding out in plain sight...unlike the well oiled military style machine that was Torchwood in the Doctor Who series. That show could have been much better.
