You can track the on and off state like you are doing using variables, but if your devices have discrete power commands i would just put those into the macro. The reason I would do this is variables can get out of sync (somebody turning something on and off manually is an example of how) and result in undesired operation. Also adding power off commands for 2-3 devices shouldnt add more than a second to the macro time.
