Have you looked at 'JP1'? (not intrinsically RF but repeaters can make up for that). Many remotes can use the system, mostly economical and without lcd display, but would recommend Insignia 67100 NS-RC05A-11, which is neat and has good button feel.

It's a learning IR remote with 54 buttons incl. red blue, yellow, green, and even without JP1 it can do 4 devices and device specific and device independent macros.

With excellent JP1 software (free from the experts) and a custom lead (c.£25) you get 8 devices, DIMs, DSMs, and wonderful access to data for commands.

Plenty to learn and discover and if you want to dabble with a software extender, then toad togs etc are also available.
