Hmm, ran into what seems to be a common problem. I sometime watch TV and use TV speakers (news etc), and I sometime watch movies and use the surround system. In the latter case, I need to mute the TV sound when I turn on the surround system, and unmute the TV when I turn it off.

But I cannot find a way to mute the TV without getting the annoying "mute icon" on the screen.

I've tried two approaches:
a) macro that sends a series of "volume down" commands
b) macro that opens TV menu and changes "speaker output" (TV vs External)

Option a) works, but it takes time to send the commands (need to send many to ensure volume reaches zero). Also, when done, I cannot restore to previous volume.

Option b) seems brittle; navigating menus sometimes fail. Might get it to work with longer delays between each cursor command, but than the process gets REALLY slow (5-10 seconds).

Judging by what google finds, there seems to be no way to mute the TV without getting the icon. Previous comments in this thread says there is no function to set volume to zero. And I cannot seem to find a function to switch speaker output directly (without going thru the menu).

Any ideas?

There are no ideas, as there is no other way to do that other than either sends multible Volume down commands or to send commands to navigate through the TV's menu, to turn the speakers off.  I have been looking for a different solution for the last 5 years, and there is none.
