My brother has an MX-3000 and rf base unit, maybe the MRF-250. Dumb question, but do you have the remote and the base unit set to the same channel? There is probably a switch on the rf unit and a software setting for the remote.

My brother's worked 100% better after I switch both from channel 0 to channel 1.

I think that after a month, he's probably got the problem solved.
