To make the adapter be COM1. Check out what was Control Panel on XP. Then, open 'System' and look at Ports. You should then click on the properties of the USB COM port and find out if you can configure the USB adapter as COM1. If you cannot, then you may end up having to purchase different adapter or contact the maker of the device to see if there are drivers allowing it to be COM1.
