I own a Pioneer Kuro6020, a 3-year old Denon AVR (which is used only for AV)

You are only using it for Audio and Video? What else would you be using it for?

I may get a TIVO soon with primary use as a better HDTV tuner (without subscription). the Kuro tuner is slow and not very good at catching signals.

What makes you think the TiVo tuner will be any better? The problem may very well be with your antenna set up.

I have very simple needs:

* Kuro: switch on/off the TV.
* Kuro: volume control (routed through the Denon), up and down
* Kuro: channel up/dn and input
* Denon On
* Denon Off
* Panasonic: Play, Pause, Forward, Backward, Next Ch, Prev Ch. Enter, Netflix

That's 16 buttons right there.

And don't forget a D-pad if you want to navigate menus, that's another 5 buttons.
Also a numerical keypad? Another 12 buttons.

under 20 buttons.

Good luck.

I can presumably put glue reminder stickers on it.

Please post pictures when finished.

I would love the remote to be shaped so that I know in the dark which way is forward and backward, and have good battery life.

Glow in the dark stickers.

Advice?
