The voltage and current required to drive an IR LED is minimal. Unless the MRF-260 was so under-specified to be on the fringe of powering 4 single emitters, it's going to work.

And pretty much every IR LED around is the same, so you can wire up whatever you want within reason.

Now, I wouldn't necessarily recommend connecting 10 emitters to each port, but even that's no problem if you simply provide additional power for the other emitters - by using a powered connecting block for example.

Telling the customer that you can't do it would be both lazy and dishonest, so it's nice to hear you didn't go that route. If you didn't want to do it, you would be better off being honest and telling them that a dual emitter exists, but you don't know if it will work in his system and you'd rather not do it.
