I'm just shooting from the hip here, never had to deal with an airport, but I guess it has some kind of encryption method just like a router?
If you're use WPA or stronger:
Last time I tried (a few firmwares ago) the remotes got so sluggish that I changed back to WEP, maybe not an option for you, but it could be worth a test just to see if it works better on WEP.
