all IR devices should be programmed and tested using the remote first.  

then add the serial devices to the MSC400 and create smart macro groups for each device.  

then import the IR devices from the remote to the MSC400 and create your macros.  

then assign triggers to the activity buttons and any buttons that will contain a serial command on the remote.
