Pretty sure bitwise requires additional hardware, as will any IR solution as well (since the iOS devices don't have built-in IR capabilities). However there are iOS solutions out there that can control networked devices direct from the iPhone/iPad via WiFi without the need for IR or other hardware, so I'd look for one of those, like this one: http://www.touchapptech.com.
