I have a failing URC that I want to replace. I have this teamed up with a MRF-250. I currently have all the equipment in another room with exception of the tv.

Current equipment:

Panasonic TH50PX50 tv
Sony Playstation 3
Directv HR-20
Kenwood VR-305 (being replaced this year)

I have a bit of technical experience and do not mind programming or tinkering with a remote. My current remote does not control my PS3, I mainly use it for playing games or streaming movies from my media server. I do not plan on any type of home automation. I might add a few more devices later on down the road. Budget wise I would have to say 300 or less, but I am open to options a little above.
I do not have a preference on styles whether it's wand style or tablet style.

You won't find any IR/RF remote that will natively control a PS3 without an adapter. The weak link may be the MRF250, but you haven't really said what issues you are having, so I wouldn't blame the TX1000 quite yet, especially if a lesser expensive solution would work. So what's the issues you have in controlling your gear?
