Exactly on both counts, mark!
This is really rather simple, but, as always, you have to have the correct gear to do this.
A. Extract by converting the button push to a series of pulses, which are then emitted as infrared B. Sense the pulses C. Convert to an encoded representation of those pulses, and store the resulting representation. For best universality, use the Pronto Hex protocol.
The equipment for A is the URC remote. The equipment for B is my refurbed Pronto TS1000. That and a laptop accomplish C.
I have carried a refurbed Pronto TS1000 with me for years as a learning tool. It hasn't failed yet.
