Try jumping from pin 2-3 on your rs232 cable to ensure that the cable is actually working properly. In hyperterminal with pins 2 and 3 connected to each other you should be able to type a letter and your letter will double as it is sending and receiving. If this isn't happening then there is something wrong with your cable or your computer settings. I am not familiar with Advanced Serial Terminal but would think it is close to hyperterminal in respect to sending and receiving commands.
